Refineries and rigs are characterized by mazes of pipe work, documenting existing setups and planning alterations is greatly facilitated by the inclusion of accurate as built 3-D data. The FARO Laser Scanner LS has been implemented for its scanning speed, modular and robust design and its portability in order to scan in entire plants and rigs. The scan data is delivered to a CAD system and the accurate 3-D representation can be quickly modeled. Over time any design modifications can be viewed in the design to check for potential collisions and rework necessary. This reduces the time required during the construction and can lead to huge uptime benefits. The lifecycle of the plant can be documented through repeat scans detailing any changes occurring and maintaining an accurate record of the current plant condition.
